Fall Hair Forecast with Anicco Annan!

Your pre-Fall guide to healthier hair for the upcoming colder months.

Is your hair shedding? Does your scalp flake, itch or both? Itchy flakes can be caused by both a dry and oily scalp. Breakage on the hair shaft can be due to dry scalp. When dandruff is present it can be an indication that there is an inbalance in your nutrition which reflects in your hair. Dry scalp/hair can be due to hormones, excess alcohol consumption, high sugar/ salt, weather, and stress. Optimum hair growth occurs when the proper foundation is maintained.  Therefore your diet will be the first area we discuss.

Your Diet is a Key Component to Healthy Hair

I have observed that when my clients who suffer from dry scalp increase their water intake a difference was shown.  Water is a vital part of our diet and helps hydrate our skin. Too much alcohol can dehydrate the body.

Secondly, when they reduced their intake of white, starchy foods (carbohydrates) (i.e. bread, rice, chips, and pasta), the result was a decrease in the amount of flakiness of the scalp.  White starches are full of sugar which can be harmful and cause flaky scalp. Also, switching from processed sugar to natural sweeteners like Organic Blue Agave help to improve your scalp. Limit your salt intake, as well.  High levels of sugar and salt turn into oils that are secreted by the follicles which causes an increase of flakes on the scalp.

Next, Omega 3 Fatty Acids, which can be found in Salmon, tuna, mackerel, avocado, and almonds are essential to a healthy scalp.

Hair Maintenance Tips

Always tie your hair up before your workout. If your hair is short tie it down with a mesh wrap which will allow it to breathe. Long hair should be swept away and a scarf should be tied around the edges so that they lay down.

After workout let body  cool down possibly go under a hood dryer before combing hair down. If no access to one use a hand held  dryer. The key is to dry the hair to maintain some style.

At night before resting always secure your hair in some way. Use a light silicone based product on your tresses to maintain the luster. You can wrap it if your style is smooth no matter the length. If you have curls you can pin curl them to help keep their shape. For all my beauties with illusions treat them as if they were your own. If its extremely long loose ponytails work great on top of the head to avoid smashing the style with your pillow.

More than Just Eating

Overall, a healthy diet full of vitamins and minerals combined with rest and relaxation help improve the condition of dry scalp.  Multi-hair, skin, and nail vitamins also improve the condition of flaky scalp. The intake of proper minerals such as zinc will also reduce the amount of flakiness in the scalp. Healthy choices where these are found would be lean proteins such as beans, soybean, and walnuts.

Aloe Vera juice is a healthy food that hydrates and improves the appearance of your skin.  Always remember that your scalp is an appendage of your skin: proper nurturing is a daily requirement.

If your scalp is itchy or has a foul odor a visit to a local dermatologist is highly recommended.  If these conditions are present your scalp condition may need to be diagnosed and treated by a dermatologist.

To all my hair illusion wearers (i.e. braids and weaves) proper hair care for the scalp for the duration of the style is highly recommended to avoid bacteria from manifesting on the scalp.

Dry flaky scalp does not have to attack you this season with proper nutrition, less stress, and more focus on you, your scalp will be a lot happier this fall!
