Lizette Chin started her career in the trade show business working with Elyse Kroll at The Collective/ENK. From there, she moved to Business Journals as advertising director, overseeing ad sales for MR magazine. She also led a small team in launching the MRket show, which quickly grew from a friendly group of menswear exhibitors to a powerful venue to which retailers and manufacturers showed tremendous loyalty.

With her strong emphasis on customer service, Chin added a warm and welcoming touch to an otherwise corporate environment. With her profound knowledge of the menswear industry, she was able to attract the right exhibitors and connect them to the right retailers, thereby helping stores and suppliers enhance their businesses.

What’s more, while running the MRket show, Chin also took on the role of publisher of MR magazine, where she used her creative talents to redesign the publication to widespread acclaim. DT: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? And some highlights in your career? Please name drop (laughs).

LC: A little bit about me? It’s strange that I’m not comfortable talking about myself. But, it’s the truth! I would like to think that I’m a dedicated professional who is grateful to love what I do and I try to lead with a sense of grace and commitment.

I’ve been fortunate to have a long career in the fashion business, specifically menswear. I’ve always been in the events portion of the business bringing together and launching menswear brands in the United States and Canada via our trade events (like PROJECT trade show).  It’s fun being a woman in the menswear business!Lizette Chin-1

DT: Why is it important to have diversity in the beauty and fashion industries?

LC: Diversity breeds understanding. It’s as simple as that. Also, how boring would this world be if we all look alike, dressed alike, acted alike? It’s through our different perspectives that we are able to learn and grow.

DT: Have you seen shifts in the last decade?

LC: Yes, but there is still a lot more room for growth.

DT: In a perfect world, what would be an ideal evolution in the industries of beauty and fashion?

LC: That there would be product and sizing for every shape, gender and culture. No matter how you identify, there would be a wealth of selections for you in beauty and fashion, with all products being fully sustainable.

DT: Do you realize that your presence in the industry,  inspires many people around the world?

LC: I consider myself somewhat humble. I am grateful for the opportunities my position affords me. All I really want to do is inspire one person on a daily basis. And, if that can make a difference, then, I’m happy.

DT: What advice would you give your younger self?

LC: My doctor once told me that I “idle high”. So, if I could tell my younger self something, it would be “to slow it down a bit and to fully live in the present.”

DT: Are you living your purpose?

LC: That is a difficult question to answer. If living your purpose is being happy in your skin, happy in your life, and love the people you spend time with, then yes, I’m living my purpose.

DT: Finish this sentence, “I am grateful for…”

LC: “…my children, family, friends, health and that I have guardian angels that watch over me.”
