Nestled in the southernmost region of Portugal, Algarve beckons travelers with its breathtaking coastline, picturesque towns, and many outdoor adventures. This region completely stole my heart when I went to visit last year and offers incredible panoramic beaches, rich cultural heritage, and lots of adventurous activities for those who love the outdoors. In this comprehensive guide, I will take you on a journey through some of the most enchanting towns and must-visit attractions and provide insights into the most worthwhile excursions!

Day 1-2: Lagos

Begin your Algarve escapade in Lagos, a charming coastal town with a storied past and vibrant present. Wander through the cobbled streets of the Old Town, admiring its historic buildings and picturesque squares. Don't miss the chance to visit the iconic Ponta da Piedade, where you can witness the stunning rock formations and take a boat tour to explore the sea caves. This natural reserve also has a breathtaking panoramic viewpoint which I recommend stopping at to see some incredible sunsets!

For beach lovers, Lagos boasts some of the region's most beautiful beaches, such as Praia Dona Ana and Meia Praia. These sandy stretches offer opportunities for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports.

Day 3-4: Albufeira

The next stop is Albufeira, known for its lively atmosphere and bustling nightlife. While its stunning beaches like Praia da Oura and Praia dos Pescadores are perfect for relaxation, the old town offers a taste of traditional Portuguese culture with its charming streets and local eateries.

For adventure enthusiasts, Albufeira also offers skydiving opportunities. I had my first ever skydiving experience with Skydive Algarve and would definitely recommend it to anyone who is thinking about skydiving for the first time! The guides were not only incredibly informative but truly make the whole experience worthwhile. If you thought the Algarve was beautiful from the ground, you can only imagine how incredible it looks from above!

Day 5: Benagil and the Famous Cave

A trip to Algarve is incomplete without visiting the iconic Benagil Cave, often described as one of the world's most beautiful sea caves. The cave can only be reached by sea, and you can choose to swim there or choose from a variety of kayaking and boat tours, Personally, I took a kayaking tour and had the incredible opportunity to hang out on the beach itself, as well as explore hidden beaches and sea caves along the route!

Day 6-7: Faro and Tavira

Conclude your Algarve journey with a visit to the region's capital, Faro. The historic center is a must-see, offering a glimpse into Algarve's past through its impressive architecture and cultural landmarks like Faro Cathedral and the charming Carmo Church. Don't forget to explore the picturesque Ria Formosa Natural Park, an intricate network of lagoons and sandbars.

For a quieter experience, head east to Tavira, a delightful town steeped in history and blessed with tranquil beaches. Wander through its quaint streets, visit the Tavira Castle, and take a boat trip along the Gilão River.

Tips for the Perfect Algarve Adventure:

  • Transportation: Renting a car is the most convenient way to explore the Algarve region, as It gives you the freedom to visit multiple towns and access more remote beaches. However, I was able to get around just fine by navigating the various bus routes and trains.

  • Cuisine: Southern Portugal is known for their fresh seafood, but some other iconic must0try dishes are cataplana (a delicious seafood stew), and pastéis de nata (custard tarts).

  • Beach Safety: Always follow beach safety guidelines, especially when swimming in the Atlantic. Pay attention to lifeguards and be cautious of strong currents. There were quite a few days we spent at the beach where lifeguards were not allowing people in the shallow waters due to strong currents, and seasoned surfers were advising any new surfers against going in the water.

  • Skydiving: If you plan to skydive, book in advance with a reputable company that adheres to safety standards and provides experienced instructors. Skydive Algarve is my personal recommendation!

A week in Algarve promises an unforgettable journey filled with stunning beaches, historical charm, and exhilarating adventures. From the vibrant streets of Lagos to the bustling nightlife of Albufeira, and the natural wonders of Benagil Cave, every moment in Algarve is an opportunity to create lasting memories. Embrace the diversity of this remarkable region, and you'll leave with a newfound appreciation for Portugal's captivating southern gem.
