When properly styled a person can feel radiant, confident, beautiful and is able to deliver a strong message. Every day I strive to "Style with a Purpose" which has been my mantra from the very beginning..DT: Who are some of the notable women you've styled?JP: I've had the great pleasure of styling amazing entertainers, actors, models, musician and singers such as: Golden Globe Awards , SAG Awards and Emmy Awards winner Claire Danes; Emmy Awards, Grammy Awards winner & Golden Globe nominee Cynthia Nixon; Emmy Award winner & Oscar nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo; SAG Award winner & Emmy Award nominee Selenis Leyva; SAG Award nominees Shakira Barrera; SAG Award nominee Kia Stevens; SAG Award nominee Marianna Palka; Grammy Award winner Isabel Leonard; Grammy Award nominee Diana Damrau; Grammy Award nominee Tia Fuller; Supermodel Veronica Webb; Supermodel Maye Musk; Lucille Lortel Award nominee Choreographer Maria Torres; and, Host and Comedian Aida Rodriguez..DT: When our readers are shopping, what are three must-haves in their wardrobe?JP: For Women: (1) a little black dress, (2) a pair of FIERCE Pumps, and (3) great statement jewelry and a handbag… oops that may be 4 must haves…(laughing) And, for Men, (1) a great black suit, (2) a versatile pair of shoes, and (3) a pair of nice fitting jeans & leather jacket…oops I did it again….(laughing).DT: When pulling for the red carpet, what do you and or clients like Selenis Leyva look for?JP: When pulling or creating couture pieces for the red carpet, I look for ways of delivering a message and creating experiences our communities will feel. For example, with Selenis Leyva, we always make sure she represents the Afro-Latina, curvy, strong woman she is to the highest level so when our youth of color sees her they can dream, imagine and be inspired. Another great example is the political statement Shakira Barrera and I created along with designer Scott Nylund calling for the freedom of the people of Nicaragua at The 2019 SAG Awards..DT: How does your culture influence your work?JP: My cultures influence my work tremendously and it's one of the driving forces in my overall life. Being raised in Puerto Rico and having a Colombian mother (I'm the John Leguizamo of fashion (laugh)). I was surrounded by natural beauty and a mixture of Caribbean & South American traditions. Each country has its own look. When we look back on our diverse history we learn about different countries political issues, war, art, food, and fashion. When I see certain clothing or fabrics it immediately transports me to a country or an island. Fashion & Style inspires all culture and its peoples' views on life..DT: Who are your style icons? Why?JP: My style icons are the creators of fashion such as Carolina Herrera, Karl Lagerfeld, Coco Chanel, McQueen, Saint Laurent, Ralph Lauren, and Oscar De La Renta. The reason why is because they all inspire me in very different ways, from classic style to edgy and simply beautiful designs. I do have my favorites when it comes to public figures who have collaborated with designers to create trends with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Audrey Hepburn, and Bianca Jagger. Today, I look forward to seeing what stars like Charlize Theron, Jennifer Lopez, Billie Porter, Angela Bassett, Salma Hayek, Penelope Cruz, Lenny Kravitz, Common, Ricky Martin, Selena Gomez, Rihanna, Beyonce, and Zoe Saldana wear on the red carpets..DT: What advice would you give to an aspiring stylist?JP: My advice to aspiring stylist is to prepare, prepare, and prepare. They can begin by interning with a fashion house (or assisting a professional stylist), and build their lookbook, resume, and experience level, so when it's their turn to be the lead stylist on a project they are prepared. Also, GET READY TO HUSTLE! (smile)
